Managing Bindii (Soliva sessilis)

Bindii is a low-growing weed characterised by a central flower. When mature, this flower produces a prickly seed pod that becomes a nuisance during warmer months, especially when you’re enjoying your lawn. The seed pods contain sharp seeds that can hurt your bare feet. To prevent this issue, it’s crucial to target Bindii before it seeds, ideally in early spring.

Bindii Treatment Options

You can manage Bindii through hand removal or by using a selective broadleaf herbicide such as Amgrow Bin-Die or All Purpose Weed Control. Amgrow Bin-Die is a concentrate that needs to be mixed with water and applied using a knapsack or pressure sprayer. All Purpose Weed Control comes with a convenient clip-on hose attachment for easy application.

To effectively eliminate Bindii, apply the herbicide to all affected areas. You should see results within 7-10 days. These herbicides are suitable for most lawn varieties, including Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo Lawn, Sir Grange Zoysia, TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda, Zoysia Australis, Nullarbor Couch Grass, Eureka Kikuyu, RTF Fescue, and Platinum Zoysia. Ensure the herbicide has dried and absorbed before allowing pets back onto the lawn.

Additional Tips

You may need to apply the herbicide multiple times to fully eradicate Bindii, especially if new growth appears.

Bindii thrives in winter and seeds in early spring. To keep it at bay, focus on prevention by regularly fertilising and watering your lawn to promote its health and resilience against weeds. Raising your mower height in winter is also crucial to avoid scalping, which can make your lawn more vulnerable to weed invasion. Acting early when you spot weeds will make them easier to manage.
